Aure facts:
Aure historic:
Historic source material is found as far back as the 16.
century. Lays and poems written in the 13. century deal with
events back to the 9. century. Prior to this we must rely on
archeological findings.
The ice withdrew from the western part of Norway
approximately 14000 years ago.
We believe that hunters migrated fom the central European
(German) plains and settled here in small communities..
One reccons that the stone age was between 15000 BC anf 8000
BC.
Traces from the Stone ages: In Aure there are many
traces from the stone ages, and the peripheral parts of Aure
can be included in the Fosna Culture, which is based on
findings in Kristiansund in the early 1900’s, and is believed
to be among the earliest settlements in Norway.

Dromnes / Kjørsvikbugen / Tjeldbergodden: At
Dromnes and Tjeldbergodden are several barrows dated to the
bronzeage, which is valuable documentation of a period of
greatness by Trondheimsleia.
The bronze age
was approx. betweeen 1500 and 500 BC.
There are also several graves from the bronze and younger
iron ages at Ulfsnes and Løvik.

Separate findings have been made among others at
Ertvågsøya.
The iron age
lasted from 500 BC till 1000 AC.
Permanent farm settlements can probably be found from the
older iron age. At that time hunting and fishing were probably
as important as farming in these settlements.
Several findings from this period help to show where the
settlemente were located.
The farms from this period probably covered large areas.
The oldest settlements in Aure
can probably be found in Aure, Todal{}, åErtvgen{},
Vinsternes{}, Arasvik{}, åVg{}, Fævelen, Gjela, Ulfsnes{} and
Lesund{}.
Within Aure municipality the sea has been the most important
arterial route at all times, and this has been a deciding
factor in which places have grown and become important as time
goes by.
The Church: Aure was probably one of the first
church communities in Norway. The Maria church in Aure was
known during early middle ages. The stave church was torn down
in 1725, and was replaced by a cross church.
The Church of today was built in 1923, after the previous
church was destroyed by fire.

It is the largest wooden church in Møre and Romsdal.
Aurelånna
in the centre of Aure is originally the main building of the
priest farm. It was built by the dean Peter Thams Buschman in
1832.

Eidestranda: Approx. 5 km (3 miles) north of Aure
centre is Eidestranda.{} This location contains today fishing
reception, guest harbour, let of rooms and boats, and arranges
each year a small boat festival at the end of July during the
Aure Week.

Lurvika: became a trade post around 1828. Serveral
buildings were raised in Lurvika, and it became court location
in 1938. The first powerplant in Aure was built at
Lurvikdammen. Today new owners are restoring Lurvika. There is
a guest harbour for boats, and a small inn which is open during
the evening.
Lurvika is on Rottøya, between Aure centre and
Ertvågsøya.
Valen: is located on Ruøya by Aursund bridge. In
Valen there has been several pronounced personalities through
the times. Here were parish court, sheriff, mail office, doctor
and trade.
Here also was a boarding house for “better ladies”. Valen
was the first part of the priest farm that became an
independent work.
Skiphamna: on Ruøya was in the 1600’s a shipping
harbour for timber. Dutch sailing ships carried lumber from
Aure to the Continent, and Skiphamna was a good waiting harbour
for these.

Husfest
is a small farm on the west side of Ertvågsøya. The place has
no roads, but can be visited from the sea after appointment
with the owner. The place has a special history. The last owner
lived there untill the 1990’s.

Mjosundet is on Ertvågsøya, and today has a marina
and a store, as well as the boat builders Mjosundet Båt and
Sletta Båt.

Foldfjorden: is located on Ertvågsøya. Foldfjorden
contains two strong maelstroms that separates the fjord from
the ocean outside.
Todalen: is in toward Vinjefjorden, approx. 20 km
(12 miles) from Aure centre. Todalen had for several years the
sheriff office, it was also a court site, and had a post office
and a trade post from the mid 1880’s. From Todalen you can
follow the road to Todalssetrene (summer farms), and the path
into the mountains.

Stutzpunkt Melland{} has a history from the last World war.
Here were built fortifications for control of Trondheimsleia.
(The sea route to Trondheim).
